The Mental Health Service

This wide-ranging Mental Health Service is responsible for the provision of comprehensive, coordinated and effective mental health care, treatment and service provision. It incorporates a range of service types (acute, non-acute, crisis, care coordination/case management, rehabilitation and recovery, early intervention, prevention and promotion), as well as services across the lifespan. This employer offers both hospital, community-based settings and subspecialty opportunities (including the option to combine facilities, settings and interests).

The Service has active research units, conjoint clinical/academic positions, and relationships with other research organisations. With its three main teaching hospitals having academic and research links to Sydney’s top Universities, positions are also available for Specialists interested in pursuing research careers, and those looking to obtain clinical and research experience. This Mental Health Service (and its university partners) have expertise in population and human rights-based mental health research; biological schizophrenia research; perinatal mental health; child and adolescent psychiatry (e.g. developmental disorders in childhood). A number of academic staff with international profiles in their respective areas hold conjoint University appointments.

As a senior member of this expansive team you will lead clinical practice within our client’s established multidisciplinary teams. You will be joining a team committed to developing and strengthening models of service delivery that are consumer and carer focused; have an explicit recovery orientation; are aligned against best evidence of effectiveness; and, where appropriate, are delivered in partnership with other government agencies and the community managed sector.

Key benefits of this opportunity include:

  • Working within a diverse community (socio-economic; cultural and linguistic) that provides interesting and challenging clinical experiences
  • Assisting in establishing and developing models of community-based mental health service delivery (e.g. ‘crisis’ teams and the evidence-based Assertive Community Treatment model) which provides the perfect platform for Psychiatrists with a strong community orientation
  • The strength and quality of multidisciplinary relationships and team-based approaches to care within the Mental Health Service provides for psychiatrists interested in working in team-based settings
  • Strong opportunities for Psychiatrists to develop sub-specialty experience (e.g. forensic; psychotherapy) or areas of interest (e.g. mood disorders, transcultural; recovery and rehabilitation) within the Health District and the community
  • The Service has the resources of a ‘big city’ service with a small town lifestyle within easy reach
  • Positions and pathways available for Psychiatrists interested in management and clinical leadership roles

Taking their commitment to raising Mental Health awareness to the next level, this dedicated Service joined forces with production company Northern Pictures to film a three-part documentary series called Changing Minds that was shown on Australian TV.

The three part documentary sensitively followed the journeys of the staff, patients and their families, the care and treatment provided and their road to recovery. In doing so it was hoped that the audience would gain a better understanding of mental health issues and challenge the stigma and discrimination that still exists.
